Baked Sweet Potato

Roasting sweet potatoes in the oven brings out their natural flavor and sweetness. If you’re busy and working all day, I also love making them in the crock pot, with this Slow Cooker Sweet Potato Recipe –just dump them in, set it and forget it. There is no need to add syrup or marshmallows to them; they are perfectly sweet on their own. But if you’re really craving that sweet tooth, I love my Sweet Potato Brulee with a brown sugar crust, Classic Sweet Potato Pie and Mini Sweet Potato Meringue Pie.

Baked sweet potatoes are the perfect, healthy side dish in the fall months. They’re also naturally gluten-free. Using this method, there’s no need to wrap them in foil. This can also be made with yams instead, they roast up perfect!

Ingredients

  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Salt and Black Pepper

How To Bake Sweet Potatoes

  1. Preheat oven to 425F. Scrub potatoes and wash to remove dirt, dry well.
  2. On a baking sheet (lined with foil or parchment paper for easy clean-up if you wish) poke holes all over the sweet with a fork.
  3. Bake in the center of the oven until the sweet potatoes or tender, or until a fork inserted in the thickest part has no resistance, about 50 minutes.
  4. Let it cool, then split the tops open with a knife. Season with salt and pepper and add your favorite toppings.

Ways to Enjoy Baked Sweet Potatoes

  • Simple: As a side dish, I like to simply eat it with some butter on top (a little goes a long way!) or try it with coconut oil to keep it vegan and dairy free.
  • Spices: For a little extra flavor, sprinkle on some cinnamon, cumin, chili powder, garlic powder or even pumpkin spice.
  • Fresh Herbs: Fresh chopped chives, parsley or scallions for garnish and flavor.
  • Cream: Sour cream or Greek yogurt, for topping.
  • Main Dish: They are also great stuffed as a main dish, topped with chili, or try this Vegetarian Loaded Baked Sweet Potato made with black beans, or this Sloppy Joe Baked Sweet Potato.

Leftovers

Store leftover baked sweet potatoes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Are sweet potatoes healthy?

Sweet potatoes are a whole food that pack a powerful nutritional punch. In one medium potato, you get over 400 percent of your daily vitamin A requirement. They are also high in fiber and potassium and are a great source of beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant that gives orange fruits and vegetables their vibrant color.

Tips for buying sweet potatoes

When buying sweet potatoes, avoid sweet potatoes with soft skin or wrinkles, cracks, or soft spots. Store in a cool, dry place for up to 3 to 5 weeks.

  1. The salt, pepper & butter is an excellent compliment to the natural sweetness of the potato, love this recipe

  2. Yup! This was definitely the fluffiest sweet potato I’ve ever had! I ate it plain with a sprinkle of salt on top. Simply delicious.

  3. I need 2 cups of cooked, mashed sweet potatoes for Sweet Potato bread. Would 4 give me 2 cups? I have 2 large & 4 small here to use. Thank you!

  4. I love making these. Even my kids love them. I love cooking but I also love that I can rub them down with some olive oil and let the over do the work. After I bake them I also wrap them in foil while I’m still cooking it just keeps them a lot warmer and can still be cooking on the inside while I’m finishing my other sides.

Like the basic recipe but don’t  mess up a good southern sweet potato with salt and pepper???!!! OMG no way 🙂 Add some butter, a few sprinkles of cinnamon and maybe brown sugar or honey. But usually the sweet potato is sweet enough on its own merits.

    1. Ms./Mr. Scales – A baked sweet potato can be dressed in any manner that those consuming it should desire; it does not “mess up a good southern sweet potato”.
      Your 3* rating is shameful!

    2. I totally agree a sweet potato should be served “sweet”. You can put anything you want on whatever you eat, sure. So add salt and pepper to cake, pie and all the other things that everyone looks at as a good sweet addition to an already salty meal. But give me a SWEET sweet potato.

      1. Omg, let each person have their own opinion on how they prefer their food. Ridiculous telling someone how they should eat something LOL. My husband prefers sweet potatoes sweet and I prefer salt and pepper. I don’t force him to eat it my way and he doesn’t force me to eat his way.  Grow up

  6. I made 5 sweet potatoes for company using these directions and they all came out perfectly. The only change I would make is to line the sheetpan with parchment paper since a couple of the potatoes stuck to the foil.

Yes, absolutely – I’ll bake several at a time and freeze with skin on.

  7. I will never bake another sweet potato in the microwave again… It was the creamiest baked sweet potato I have EVER had… I made a vegetable medley to eat on the side (zucchini, carrot, baby bellas, and onions)… Best meal I’ve had all week. I actually can’t wait to bake another sweet potato – LOL!

Thank you so much for sharing – I have baked them in the oven before, but I had been wrapping them in foil and cooking them on a lower temperature… They never came out this good and I consider myself a decent cook. Crazy how something so simple can be a game-changer!

  8. Thank you for your recipes. I need help with seasoning and you have given me several new ideas, yay! A side-bonus is the user friendly website and I find the “recipe cards” and the “videos” a great help to me, as well.

These look great! We try to order sweet potato fries when we are out, so I am going to have to try baking some in the oven and hope they come out as good as these ones.

Would these be good as a make ahead for the week for lunch? How should they be stored if so?

  11. Probably my favorite food item. I pretty sure one of the factors in my divorce is that I also eat the sweet potato skin…sometimes sacrifices must be made.

  12. If you ever have a cold Sunday afternoon at home, definitely try Smitten Kitchen’s Slow Roasted Sweet Potatoes. She bakes them very low and slow (like 3 hours) and then finishes them under the broiler. Wow. It’s like a completely different vegetable. Amazing.

  13. I adore sweet potatoes and it’s such a happy place that they are also good for us. My favorite topping is soft goat cheese, salt and some red pepper flakes.

I bake sweet potatoes in the microwave. I set it for 5 minutes, and then check it and turn it. Depending on the size of the potato, it usually takes a few minutes more. Turns out great every time.

I bake mine in a 225 degree oven until they are done. It takes several hours for the potatoes to cook but the flesh caramelizes and there is zero need for butter or oil…a few sprinkles of salt. Delicious and healthy.
