Tropical fruits like mangoes and avocados are my favorite fruits. Paired together in this salad with grilled chicken, it couldn’t be more delicious! More recipes I love with mango are this Pork Tenderloin with Mango Salsa, these Mango Coconut Ice Pops and this Mango Coconut Chia Pudding.

When I was a kid, I spent many summers at my cousin’s house in Puerto Rico. I remember all the mangoes falling off her mango trees, so many it was hard to keep up with them. Back then mangoes weren’t as popular here in the states, but luckily today you can find them in every supermarket.

This salad screams California, which is where it was inspired from! For this salad I used red butter lettuce, but you can use any baby lettuce. And especially home grown if you have any in your garden!

For the dressing I kept it real simple, extra virgin olive oil and white balsamic vinegar which is naturally sweet and perfect on this salad.

  1. Such a wonderful summer salad! I will be making this again very soon. The only change I made was to add a jalapeno pepper & a little lime juice to the mango/avocado mix.

  2. Such a refreshing summer salad! I added jalapenos to the mano mix and some mustard to the dressing. Excellent and adding to my favorites!

  3. I love your site and the weekly meal ideas. I look forward to my email every weekend. This is such a delicious salad. I was afraid my husband wouldn’t like it because it was so simple but the dressing is amazing and the flavors come together wonderfully! Thank you for this and all of your recipes. I own all your cookbooks too!

  4. So simple and yet so amazing! I make this all the time and it goes great with grilled chicken seasoned with jerk seasoning.

  5. I made this salad for the third time, this time for company. The only thing I changed was to add a little crumbled feta (for salty tartness, and I use Trader Joe’s exclusively) and toasted pine nuts for a little texture and umami. The simple white balsamic is a revelation! It brings out the sweetness of the mango and I put it on any salad with fruit in it now. This salad is a household favorite!

  6. Is this still Whole30 with oils? We’re trying the Whole30 diet out for the first time and this looks great, but we want to make sure it complies.

  7. Try to Subscribe, but was turn down because of my Email Address!! Why???? That is my Email Address?

    1. Hi Janet. I am honestly not sure why it is not taking your email (I tried 3 times to enter it as well) the only thing I can think is that maybe is it something with Juno. If you have another email option let me know and I will try to enter that. I am sorry I can’t make this one work!

  8. This is such a simple recipe, but it’s incredibly delicious! I was so surprised at how good this turned out to be, and after eating this for a couple days in a row for a quick lunch, made it again the next week.

  9. Love! I used blood orange virgin olive oil from our local olive mill. My husband is a Type 2 Diabetic. He loved this salad!

  10. I made the recipe exactly as written, except substituting romaine for the butter lettuce.  The combination of flavors was delicious. I couldn’t stop myself from eating a second helping.  I will definitely make this again.

  11. I really liked this but I am not a fan of vinegar – is there anything else I could use in place of the vinegar?  Or anything to add to it to mask the taste a bit?

  12. I loved this recipe! My husband said: Are we supposed to eat this or take a picture. 🙂 It tasted just as great as it looked.

  13. Can you meal prep with this, just adding the avocado when ready to eat? Would love to make this on a Sunday and have for the week. Looks delicious!

  14. Absolutely delicious.   Used Mahi Mahi pan fried with garlic instead of chicken as I was eating alone but will try with chicken next for the family.  I also had left over mango salsa with cilantro that made a nice addition to the salad.  The olive and white balsamic made for a perfect light dressing

    1. The chicken is just grilled regular. You can season it however you like. It’s called “California” typically because of the avocado. Over 90% of avocados in the US are grown in California.

Pick one that has lots of red color, and yields to a soft squeeze. You can buy and let it sit for several days. They sho7ld also have a sweet smell. Good luck.

  15. Ooh that mango just completed the whole salad!! Looks so fresh and yummy 😉 better go buy some mangos . Thanks for sharing your recipe!

  18. Just made for dinner and so yummy!! I loved the vinaigrette. I would also add a nut next time to give it some crunch, like pecans. Thanks again!!

  19. Just made this and it was absolutely incredible! This is the 8th recipe I've made from your since last Thursday. Love them all. Thank you!

  20. Just curious, the serving size for this delicious recipe only says 1/4th and I was curious as to what the unit was. A cup? Thanks!

  21. Can I use any other vinegar like Red wine vinegar, reg balsamic vinegar or apple cider vinegar or even just regular vinegar?

  22. Hi there! I'm a loyal follower and doer of your recipes and I'm from Puerto Rico, it's a nice to know you have family over here in my beautiful island 🙂 keep posting yummy goodness

  23. I come from India and during the summer we get a massive variety of mangoes but the sweetest of all is the Alphonso which you rarely get here in the US. Would recommend a good Indian store between April – June to get the Alphonso mangoes and you will never go back to having any other kind… Oh by the way it works great in this Salad too.

  24. I just had this for lunch and it was delicious! I almost left out the mangos because I wasn't sure if I would like them, but I'm glad I didn't. They were the star of the salad for me!

  25. Just made this for dinner – it was awesome. I used white onion instead of red, just personal preference, but it was delicious!

  26. Well, there was one state that mangoes were popular since it became one in 1959 — Hawai'i! I grew up eating mangoes…the best. Now that I live in California, I like avocados. This recipe meshes both my favourite fruits in one. The grilled chicken, the butter leaf lettuce, and the vinaigrette dressing makes it a great (and healthy) California meal. Love it!

  27. Great, easy recipe, had everything I needed at home already. Everyone liked it…even the kiddies!

  28. I loved it… I added fresh cilantro because I love the taste it adds to salads. Thank you for sharing your wonderful recipes.

  29. I had doubts about this one…..I've done tons of your recipes and so far not one flub (except the quinoa fried rice…but that's just because I realized I detest quinoa)…..BUT this one WAS AHHHHHHH-MAYYYYYY-ZING!!!!! And so easy!

Can't wait to try this. I didn't start to eat Avocado's until last year when I realized just how healthy they were. Honestly, I didn't like the taste either, but I did learn to like it. I even eat Guacamole now too… which if you knew me you wouldn't believe that lol.

But this recipe not only looks delicious but is healthy… you can't beat that.

  31. Thank you Gina… your recipes are AMAZING. I don't know why you don't have your own show on the Food Network! I just made this for lunch. I didn't have any lettuce, so I just had the salad alone. I used my Misto Olive Oil sprayer instead of the dressing, with a little salt and pepper, and it was so YUMMY!

  32. Made this for lunch with the husband, and we both loved it! I think your citrus vinaigrette would be great with it, too. Thanks!

  33. Long time reader, first time commenter here. 🙂

Gina, this was so good. My husband and I loved every single bite. It's going to be enjoyed many a time this summer.

  34. Oh yum! Had this for dinner last night and the whole family really liked it. It was super refreshing and something I will be making a lot this summer. Added some black beans I had left over from a previous dinner and they were a great addition. Thanks!

  35. Wow…. makes me hungry.. great combination of taste and texture… creaminess of the avocado and the sweet taste of mangoes.. great!!!

My fiance would hate this. I would ADORE this. I might have to have this during lunch one day. Sounds delicious!

  39. this is great I pick up a roasted chicken took skin off and cut it up small and the only thing i added was some nuts for crunch needless to say i am having it tonight to for dinner

  40. YUMMM!!! So happy that here in south Texas we have mangoes, guava and all kinds of crazy tropical fruits!!

  41. I love this recipe, but I'm not a fan of the mango.

Do you think fresh pineapple would work, or what do you think would be a good substitution?

    Thanks!

  42. I totally agree with you about living on a tropical island! When we go to DR, I loveee grabbing limonsillas (I think they are called Spanish limes?). My aunt lives across the street and she has a mango tree and as much as I think I can eat all the ones that have fallen, I can't!

Also can't wait for guava to reach the states! I occasionally grab a Goya guava drink when I'm in the supermarket. So yummy!

Recipe looks amazing and will be trying this soon. Anything with avocados is a must have for me. Thanks Gina!

    1. Another delicious recipe for our dinner rotation. Ripe mango is a must for this one. I loved the combination of grilled chicken, sweet mango, creamy avocados and acid from the dressing. Yum! Put together in less than 20 mins.

  44. yum, this looks wonderful! I had a version of this at harrods when i was in london and have been wanting to recreate it ever since. thanks for the motivation!!

  45. Looks absolutely wonderful! Refreshing, yet filling, salads are the perfect way to beat the heat! 🙂 And gotta love avocado and mango!!! Can't wait to try this!

I've done a pineapple and avocado salad that was amazing. You could even toss in some slices of low-fat ham and do a kind of Hawaiian theme!

    2. great ideas, thanks, I love Pineapple, papyaya, mango, and guava, make me shiver. Thanks, will try the peaches idea and my fav is pineapple.

    3. This recipe sounds fantastic, other than the mango! I just can't eat it – too much like canteloupe, which I don't like!!! Haven't tried papaya, might give that a try, but will def. try it w/ pineapple!!!

Growing up in Hawaii, we used to always go to my uncle's house to pick mangoes when they were in season. They're so good! I'd just cut them in half and eat it with a spoon 🙂 This salad looks perfect and so fresh!
